Self-care is often reduced to bubble baths and face masks. But at its core, self-care means recognizing the relationship you have with yourself and choosing to prioritize it. That looks different for everyone, and it does not have to be elaborate or expensive to be effective.
The 8 Dimensions of Wellness offer a useful map. Each dimension represents an area of life that contributes to overall wellbeing, and tending to each one, even in small ways, adds up over time.
1. Physical Move your body regularly, eat nutritious food, establish a sleep routine, and take breaks throughout the day. Physical self-care is the foundation everything else rests on.
2. Emotional Make space to feel and process your emotions without judgment. Journaling, therapy, and somatic practices like acupuncture and breathwork are all ways to tend to your emotional health.
3. Social Nurture the relationships that restore you. Invest time in friendships, family, and community connections that feel reciprocal and grounding.
4. Spiritual Connect with something larger than yourself, whether that is nature, meditation, prayer, ritual, or a creative practice. Spiritual self-care is about meaning, not necessarily religion.
5. Intellectual Keep your mind engaged and curious. Learn something new, read widely, find creative outlets, and give yourself permission to explore ideas outside your comfort zone.
6. Environmental Your surroundings affect your nervous system more than most people realize. Create spaces that feel calm, organized, and intentional, even if it is just one corner of a room.
7. Occupational Find meaning and balance in your work. Set healthy boundaries, take your time off, and pay attention to whether your work aligns with your values.
8. Financial Financial stress is one of the most significant and underaddressed contributors to poor health. Small steps toward financial literacy and stability are a form of self-care too.
Where to Start
You do not need to tend to all eight dimensions at once. Pick one area that feels most neglected right now and start there. Small, consistent actions across each dimension build a foundation of wellbeing that is genuinely sustainable.
If you are looking for a structured space to explore these dimensions, The Care Lab is a wellness program designed to do exactly that. Learn more and join the community!
